Second Forecast Dinner by CFA Community Vietnam

The second Forecast Dinner by CFA Community Vietnam, hosted in HCMC, offered delegates first-hand insights from experts in the investment industry.

Ho Chi Minh City, 22 February 2017 – Following the success of last year’s event, the second Annual Forecast Dinner by CFA Community Vietnam was hosted in Ho Chi Minh City, joined by leading experts from Vietnam and Asia-Pacific region. The panelists and attendees gave their forecast for Vietnam’s economy and capital market in 2017, including GDP growth, inflation, exchange rate, macro-economic policies and the VN-Index; along with a general outlook for key industries, such as real estate, banking, and commodities.

“In the short to medium term, I expect Vietnam growth to be between 6-7% thanks to better institutional capacity. The State Bank of Vietnam manages the currency more flexibly and is much more market oriented. The government, too, isn’t just purely pro-growth at the expense of sustainability. This can be seen in the current account where it made a massive turn-around from negative to positive. This is thanks to stronger growth of exports than imports. Although a current account deficit is not a negative event in Vietnam’s case, the key is to avoid excessive and unsustainable growth,” a regional view remarked by one of the three panelists, Ms. Trinh Nguyen, Senior Economist, Emerging Asia at Natixis Hong Kong.
